Back to College Tips

Coming back to college to finish your first degree is a big decision. Many companies require ongoing training and skills development, and a college degree brings you greater earning potential overall.

It’s also important to note that finishing your degree is crucial. Those with some college but no bachelor’s degree, for example, make only marginally more per year than high school completers on average and miss out on the chance to fully recoup their college investment.”

We want your transition into our Degree Completion Program to go as smoothly as possible, so we have these tips to get you started.

Have a game plan

We offer both part-time and full-time classes, so you can build the class schedule that’s right for you. If you’re feeling unsure, you can start by taking a couple part-time classes while you adjust. Many companies encourage and expect ongoing learning and will help pay for your college classes, so be sure and check with your employer.

Build a structure

Our class schedules offer you a lot of flexibility to work on your courses. Plan regular study sessions throughout the week, so you can be the best you in class, at work, and at home.

Keep yourself on track

If it’s been a while since you were in the classroom, you’ll need to use your time management skills to make sure you give your college courses proper attention, especially if you continue to work. It’s helpful to keep track of your schedule for a couple weeks to see where you can dedicate more time to the activities that are most important to you.

Find new connections

Don’t be afraid to speak up in class. You have many life experiences and perspectives you can share. You are all on educational journeys and can learn a lot from each other.

Take advantage of our smaller class sizes

You are an important member of the class and our college community. With smaller class sizes, you can network with your classmates and learn more from your professor. Your professor today may become your mentor tomorrow.

Reach out to your Success Coach

Unlike some other college programs, your UC Merced Degree Completion Program Success Coach is available to you all the way, from when you return to campus until you earn your degree.

If you start feeling overwhelmed by paperwork, course load options, or your degree requirements, you can reach out to your Success Coach for a good discussion and next steps to help you succeed.

Enjoy the view

You made the first important step by deciding to finish your degree. Be sure to enjoy the UC Merced community while you learn. You will have many opportunities to attend events, join group activities and expand your skills.
